  1. Have highway traffic moving downhill at 50 MPH or more.
  2. Create a ramp going uphill which merges traffic in to the passing lane of the highway.
  3. Make sure to block visibility from the ramp to highway with a concrete median.
  4. The most important step, put a 'Stop'* sign at the end of the ramp.
  5. Let the mayhem begin.

* It appears the city switched out yield signs in favor two stop signs... Yikes

Q. Why?
A. Why ask why?

Q. So there's crazy traffic here? I don't see it...
A. While even Sundays can bring out the biggest assholes, the merge lane is busy during weekdays from 7 am - 9 pm EST. The best times seem to be between about 10 am and 6 pm.

Q. Ok, I see it's weird. What is happening, how does it not work?
A. One highway exits and merges on to another highway, there are only two major problems;

  • The merge lane is on the wrong side of the existing highway.
  • There is a stop sign on the merge lane causing drivers to brake or divert attention away from the most important thing happening; whatever is infront of them.

Q. I still don't get it. Can you draw me a picture?
A.

Q. There's a bunch of cars, whats the worst that could happen?
A. Most of the time it's just business as usual, horns honking and cursing. There are accidents a few times a week here, and sometimes even four car pile ups.

Q. This seems like an awful place to live. Why put up with it?
A. In this city, there aren't many places you can get away from it's chaotic nature. After a little while individual cars dissipate in an ocean of sound. It's quite beautiful at times. Plus if you close the windows, the noise almost completely disappears.

This is the Interstate 95 -> Westside Highway Junction on the upper westside of NY.
